How to View Revision History and Restore Old Versions in Google Docs

Gooru Tip - Maximize the video player and adjust video quality for optimal viewing!

Revision history is a really helpful feature in Google Docs, essentially meaning that you can go back and look at any version of the document, and restore it if you like.

Important to note that restoring a document does not erase ANY versions of the document, it just moves the restored version up to the top of the list.

  1. Can this be used to remove bad data someone put in with good data.
For example, person A creates document, person B adds bad info and finally person C adds good data. Can you restore back to original and then restore what person C did without bringing back what person B did?

    Thanks

    • THIS IS AMAZINNNNGG!!!!!!!! Accidentally replaced a google docs file and thought I had lost hours of work with a deadline just a few hours away! Such a simple trick, thanks for sharing!

  2. When I try to look at revision history, it is “grayed out” so I can’t select it. I had an excel spreadsheet that someone accidentally deleted data. I would like to get the data back but don’t know how to do it. Thanks for any help you can give. -Denise

    • Denise,

I don’t believe you will be able to view the revision history for an Excel file.

If you converted the file to the Spreadsheet format, then any changes made after the conversion should be visible. But if the changes were made before the conversion, they won’t be visible.

  3. Is there a way to get all the revisions made in a document in one view?
Nice clear presentations by the way.

    • Hey Rikki,

If you click on the link at the top of your Google Doc that says ‘Last edit was _____ at _:__’ it should open a tab on the right-hand side of your screen with all of the revision history.
