How to Organize your Label List

We’ve received a few messages / comments about managing the Label List on the left-hand side of the Gmail inbox, so we thought we’d make a quick video explaining it.

With the Label List, you can decide which messages are the most important. For example, I hide the Spam and Trash labels because I rarely open them, but I have the All Mail label visible so I can get quick access to my archived mail.

This is one of the easiest ways to organize your inbox, but a lot of people aren’t quite sure how to do it. Learn how in this video!

    • Sorry about that. We were having some issues with YouTube so I needed to delete the video and upload a duplicate.

      Apologies for the inconvenience!

  1. I noticed in this video your inbox is set up in sections and to the right you have separate areas “Wizard Completions” and “Chrome Extension Questions”, etc. What is this view and how do you use it?

    Thanks.

    • Hey Kitty,

I have my inbox set up with the Multiple Inboxes Gmail Lab. You can learn more about Multiple Inboxes with this short video tutorial.

Multiple Inboxes isn’t for everyone, and it takes some getting used to. But after using it for a while I won’t be going back to Priority or Classic any time soon!

    • Hey there,

On the left side of the Gmail page, click the square to the right of a label.

Select a color from the palette that appears. Changes will be instantly reflected in Gmail.
You may also customize colors for your labels by clicking on the square to the right of a label and selecting Add custom color.

You can remove a color by selecting Remove color at the bottom of the color palette.

  2. Is there a way to move any of your created labels above the default gmail labels like inbox, all mail, trash, etc.?

    • Charlie,

No, those default labels are set. You do have the option to hide them (excluding inbox).
