Gooru Tip - Maximize the video player and adjust video quality for optimal viewing!
The new Google Drive Create Menu is great for a number of reasons. Our favorite is the improved integration with third-party apps. But when it was initially released, a lot of our users were very confused about the disappearance of the ‘Create from template’ option.
Luckily, this feature wasn’t retired, but just hiding a little deeper within Drive. To create from a template:
- Open up a Google Doc (Sheet, Presentation, etc.). It can be new or existing.
- Select File > New > From template…
- You can also visit the URL: https://drive.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/templates?view=domain (replace yourdomain with your actual domain)
I wish Google would change it back to how it was. A lot of people are confused by these extra steps.
This is a fail from Google. It’s one thing when change is uncomfortable but for the better, this is neither comfortable OR better. Cmon guys!
Jeremy,
I think the improved integration with 3rd-party apps really brings a lot to Google Drive. But I agree, creating from a template was a lot easier / intuitive with the old Create Menu.
I agree – the “Create from template” was superior.
With the new process, you are left with a blank version of the doc type you started with (e.g. a blank sheet if you then select create from template).
A feature I would like to see (as a corporate user with lots of shared folders) is Create and Save to Folder – so my users can file the document immediately to the Shared Folder they want.
I will raise this with Google as a Feedback.
I’ve also found that unless I have my users select “Add to My Drive” for our Shared Folders, then they don’t even get an option to move (“Organise”) the file to the correct shared folder.
I’ll put it down to learning time, but Google could make it easier for Admins to set this all up and roll-out to a team.
I certainly like where it’s going though…
You can also click “Connect more apps” and search “from template” which will place the icon right in the Create menu. Saves a few clicks and it’s more visual.
This option is much cleaner (Connect more apps).
When you do as the video suggests you end up with the ‘Untitled Document’ tab still open.
